FUE hair transplant

FUE (follicular unit extraction) is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicular units are taken from the back and sides of the head with a micro-punch and placed one by one in thinning areas. It leaves tiny dot-like marks instead of a linear scar, and the transplanted hair usually keeps growing over the long term.

What is FUE?

Hair grows in natural groups of one to four hairs called follicular units. In FUE, each unit is extracted on its own with a punch smaller than a millimetre, so the donor area heals as a pattern of tiny points that are hidden once the hair grows back. Before FUE became standard, follicles were harvested from a strip of scalp (FUT), which leaves a linear scar across the back of the head.

FUE is the most versatile technique. It suits hairlines, the top of the head and the crown, and it can be used for both small and large sessions.

How FUE is performed

1. Hairline and plan. Dr. Güder designs your hairline with you, marks the areas to treat and confirms the graft count.
2. Preparation. The donor area, and usually the recipient area, is shaved short so every graft can be extracted and placed precisely.
3. Anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia is delivered with a needle-free, air-pressure system.
4. Extraction. Follicular units are removed one by one and kept in a cooled storage solution.
5. Channel opening. Fine channels are opened in the recipient area, setting the angle, direction and density of the new hair.
6. Implantation. Grafts are placed into the channels with fine forceps. On the Platinum and Diamond packages, Dr. Güder places the grafts himself.

A typical session takes most of the day. You go back to your hotel the same evening.

Who is FUE for?

• Men with stable pattern hair loss who need medium to large coverage.
• Patients who wear their hair short and want to avoid a linear scar.
• Crown and mid-scalp restoration, where large numbers of grafts are needed.
• Selected women with pattern thinning, after assessment.

Recovery after FUE

Avoid strenuous exercise for 2 to 3 weeks, and protect your scalp from direct sun while it heals. You receive written aftercare instructions and a kit with shampoo, lotion and medication.

Risks and how they are managed

FUE is a minor surgical procedure and is generally well tolerated. As with any procedure, there are possible side effects:

• Swelling and tightness in the first days, which settle on their own.
• Temporary numbness in the donor or recipient area, which usually resolves within weeks.
• Small pimples (folliculitis) while new hairs grow through, treated simply if needed.
• Temporary shedding of existing hair near the recipient area, which usually grows back.
• Infection is uncommon. Procedures take place in a hospital setting at Acıbadem, and your aftercare plan covers hygiene and medication.
